Greatness starts from within
We all have different definitions of what “greatness” means to us. For some, it’s only achievable once you’ve reached the highest level in your field of expertise. For others...it’s felt each day as a result of the actions we take. Are we grateful? Do we pay our debts? Do we give freely without expecting anything in return? Do we put weight in the work and not the results? Are we present for the people who support/love us?
Society and the media portray “greatness” in such a fashion that it makes many believe it’s unattainable. When in reality, it can be found in the smallest of social circles. Jiu-jitsu schools are a perfect example. In my opinion, greatness is not found in who has the most tournament victories or who performs the best in class. I see it in the students who are relentless in their consistency. Consistent attitude, helping to preserve a positive and uplifting culture. Consistent attendance, helping not only themselves but their teammates as well. Consistent belief, that they will improve their lives by doing these GREAT things. Jiu-Jitsu is a team sport. We need solid role models more than we do world champions.
Ask yourself, “Am I demonstrating greatness in the areas of my life that matter?” “Are my failures changing me for better or for worse?” “Am I only serving myself?” We usually already know the answer. Losers who demonstrate greatness in their life never feel bad about their results. They understand their purpose is much greater than any single victory or defeat.
